Bringer of the Dance Trance, That Shakes the Chains Off.
Before she was called Luxey Lo, she was known only as Little Lo ~ a shimmer-skinned Merbabe with laughter like ripple tides and curls too wild for coral crowns.
She was born of Yamaya’s laughter and Oshún’s last golden tear ~ blessed by two mothers, twice anointed. But scrolls could not tame her. She was not made for the hush of the deep.
One moonless night, she shed her tail, stepped through the veil, and WALKED out the waves ~ bare, breathless, and gleaming beneath a flickering Brooklyn streetlamp she stood there in wonder.
Two girls on the stoop caught the glow.
“Ayo, girl… you good?”
Before she could answer, They wrapped her in sisterhood, love and protection. Took her upstairs. Put gold hoops in her ears. Picked her fro into a throne. Slid her into denim shorts with fringe that moved like seaweed in a storm.
LL Cool J’s “Around the Way Girl” played from the box ~ as they danced and clothed her.
She couldn’t help but move with them.
The air changed. What was heavy melted. What was tense, released. Their laughter rang like conch shells.
And one of them said:
“DAMN girl, you look deluxe.”
“It’s Luxey Lo now, don’t you know?” She responded. As she realized her purpose.
Born of sea and sacred sorrow, but made whole through rhythm, movement, and the joy of those who’d nearly forgotten.
She became a myth in motion. Not just a block dancer ~ a deliverer.
Wherever Melanated souls were sinking under silence and weight, she rose.
No incantation, no spell ~
just hips, heartbeat, and release.
But then ~ a hydrant burst.
A spray of water arced into the sky like memory, landed on her skin, and shimmer met shimmer.
Her legs quivered. And scales started to appear.
The crowd froze.
She didn’t. She just smiled. Blew a kiss.
And ran barefoot through the streets, diving into the sea near the city’s edge ~ a streak of gold and legend.
She hasn’t been seen since. Only felt.
When the nights grow too thick, when joy feels lost, and your hips begin to move like they remember something your heart forgot?
That is her.
Not a rumor. Not a ghost.
Luxey Lo.
